The
Technology - VisiScreen® OSS-C
VRC
uses an advanced screening system, developed and patented by NASA.
The system is based on a process called "photorefraction."
It takes a detailed, highly precise color photo of the child's eyes
that can then be analyzed for a wide range of problems. The system's
key element is a photorefractor consisting of a special camera,
lens, and electronic flash. The flash sends light into the child's
eyes and from there, it is then reflected from the retina back to
the camera lens, producing a specialized image. Abnormalities are
identified by a trained observer's visual examination of the image.
This
technology offers several major benefits. Unlike any prior form
of eye screening, it requires no response from the child being screened.
It is also very fast requiring only 30 seconds or so per child.
From the child's point of view, the process is literally as simple
as having a picture taken. In addition, it detects a wide range
of eye problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, differences
in the eyes that can indicate or lead to amblyopia, alignment problems,
opacities such as cataracts, and a number of other ocular abnormalities.
The
VisiScreen® OSS-C is designed for safe, convenient screening
in both clinical and mass-screening environments. It is sturdy,
portable, requires little maintenance, and provides consistently
interpretable results.
